This was taken at an overlook of a national wildlife refuge at Hanalei.
This is the view from our deck at the second house we rented. We spotted
whales from this deck and watched a mother and baby whale breaching for
about 20 minutes one afternoon. And then Tom turned his attention back to the
satellite TV feed.
This was taken at the beach we had access to. The walk back up
from the beach was very strenuous, requiring that Tom have many
hours of satellite TV feed to recuperate.
What this photo does not capture is what Tom is pointing at: his torn and bleeding calf; a
horrific, gaping wound that probably should have been tended to by a surgeon if Tom
had cell reception and could interrupt somebody's helicopter tour to get an airlift.
Incidentally, Tom is at the bottom of 'Opaeka'a Falls on the east side of the island, just
outside Wailua. Apparently, these same falls were filmed and used for the intro to
Fantasy Island.
That's Tom's head bobbing in the pool at the base of the falls. The cold
water was used to cauterize the awful flesh wound.
This is Natalie at the base of the falls, worried sick and gnashing her teeth about Tom's
catastrophic injury. Is there an award for such caring dedication? There should be.
If you look carefully, you'll see Tom signaling to the rescue party--even after a second fall that
gravely injured two of his fingers--that all is well after his trip to the falls. He'll make it the rest
of the way. Signage be damned!
