We started our hike at a high elevation on the dry, western side of the island. The hike took
us to the wet, northern side of the island on the Napali coast. This swamp is the largest,
high-elevation swamp in the world. When we were there, it was strangely devoid of bugs, or
any other form of wildlife.
You have probably noted how cloudy the weather was. The famous viewpoint we hiked to
was completely socked in. On our way back, however, the clouds started to clear and we
discovered what we'd been missing on the way out. We had no idea that the clearing in the
trail had these panoramic and dramatic views! The following photo was taken on the way
back.
We took it easy the day after the hike to the swamp. We enjoyed a beverage in Poipu.
No highway circumnavigates Kauai. Here we are at the most Western point a person
can drive to. The beach is called Polihale Beach. We were happy to have rented a 4 x 4
for this trip because the road was the most heavily rutted either of us had ever traveled.
This is a sunset from the same beach.
